Since 2012 FWAG SW has been working with partners, including the Environment Agency, Catchment Sensitive Farming and Wessex Water, to provide advice to farmers in the Wessex Region; more specifically Poole Harbour, Stour and Hampshire Avon catchments, on management they can undertake to increase nitrogen use efficiency.

Work has included use of the EA developed Nitrate Leaching Tool (NLT) to pilot its use to estimate predicted leaching from farms; bespoke implementation plans to identify the management options farms are already adopting and also recommend additional options; and some events for farmers to help raise awareness of the issue and increase understanding of how to implement key recommendations. In 2015 the scope of the work widened to look at diffuse pollution from phosphates, sediment and metaldehyde as well as nitrates.
